Risa Kennedy, MA, CCC

As a Canadian Certified Counsellor and an ADHD Certified Clinical Service Provider, I offer trauma-informed counselling services to individuals, couples, youth, and families from all walks of life.

My clinical training is grounded in evidence-based modalities such as EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and polyvagal theory. As a therapist, I recognize the interconnectedness of the mind, heart, and body in responding to distress and engaging in the healing process.

I specialize in supporting those living with a chronic illness or a significant change in their life, like postpartum and menopause. As well as those who are or suspect they are neurodiverse, or those who have lived through difficult experience(s) which caused them to adjust to protect themselves in life some way. Additionally I offer the inclusion of faith and spirituality into the context in which we navigate our healing path forward.

My private practice is through Portage Counselling, but I am so pleased to offer in-person counselling sessions at Haven Therapeutics in Courtenay. This team approach allows individuals who receive care here to also integrate their therapeutic treatment in a synchronized way.

Kasia Stepien, MA, MSc, Registered Clinical Counsellor

As a Registered Clinical Counsellor, I help people live with more ease and well-being in the face of life’s challenges: stress, anxiety, trauma, depression, illness, grief, loss, and more. I’ve been providing virtual and telephone counselling in my private practice, Mental Freedom Counselling, since 2021. I’m now delighted to add in-person counselling within the serene space at Haven Therapeutics.

My main counselling approach is a collaborative and evidence-based approach called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Using ACT, my clients learn to manage difficult thoughts and feelings, develop a stronger sense of self, and engage in actions that take them towards a more fulfilling life. I also provide Exposure Therapy for anxieties and phobias, Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD and trauma, and CBT-i for insomnia.

I have special interest in supporting people with distress related to the climate crisis, grief, issues of mortality and end-of-life, and management of stress and burnout. And I love helping people experience personal growth, finding ways to live their lives with more confidence and vitality.

At Haven Therapeutics, we believe in putting the patient first.

This means referring to other practitioners and modalities when needed, and encouraging patients to explore a range of therapies to find the combination that works best for them. We strongly believe in the team approach to patient care.
